The first winner of the Sandover Medal, Tom Outridge tied with Perth’s Cyril Hoft and was awarded the gong on the casting vote of the league president.
In 1977 Hoft was awarded the medal retrospectively. Outridge was a rangy ruck-man who became a permanent fixture in WA teams. He was a member of the WA carnival team which won the Australian title in 1921, tried his hand at coaching while playing in 1923 and also captained Subiaco that year, 1927 and 1929. One of WA’s first commentators, calling matches from a seat inside the boundary line to get as close to the action as possible.
