It is not just about how good you are but who else is good at the same time. Ted Tyson has every claim to being one of WA’s greatest full forwards but played for WA just four times. The reason? His career coincided with George Doig’s, arguably the greatest full forward the state has seen. The two goal machines re-wrote goal kicking records in the 1930s and 1940s. Tyson finished third in the goal kicking in his debut year of 1930s and 1940s. Tyson finished third in the goal kicking in his debut year of 1930, second in 1931 and won in 1932. He had every reason to believe he was set for a period of dominance in the competition. Then Doig arrived and over the next five years the pair finished first and second on the goal kicking list. The problem for Tyson was he was second every year. But, he played a critical role in four West Perth premierships and did himself justice when he did get to play for WA, kicking 13 goals in four matches. He once kicked 17.5 out of a team tally of 18.7 in 1938 and West Perth still lost the game.
