Allistair Pickett was a dynamic and highly skilled rover who played a leading role in Subiaco’s golden era in the WAFL during the first decade of the century. His outstanding impact at the club saw him named in the Subiaco Team of the Century in 2008 – the only member of the team to have commenced his career in the National era (post-1990).
Pickett, born in Subiaco and played his early football in his hometown of Gnowangerup and Katanning, launched his league career with West Perth in 1996, aged 23, after knee reconstruction surgery the previous year. A second knee reconstruction in 1997 saw him restricted to three games and a return to country football in Narrogin in 1999.
Enticed to join Peel Thunder in 2001 at the mature age of 28, Pickett quickly established himself as an elite WAFL player, claiming the club’s first Sandover Medal in 2002, despite a mid-season broken jaw.
After moving to live in Perth’s northern suburbs in 2003, Pickett joined his old Peel coach and mentor Peter German at Subiaco, and the most outstanding phase of his career was launched.
In winning the 2004 Sandover Medal, Pickett became the first and only player to win the WAFL’s highest individual honour at two clubs.
A diminutive figure at just 169cm, Pickett nevertheless brought a fierce approach and elite preparation, and his remarkable skills, creativity, and tenacity helped the Lions claim a wonderful harvest of four flags between 2004 and 2008. His outstanding durability enabled him to continue beyond his 38th birthday, playing his final WAFL league game in the 2011 Grand Final loss to Claremont.
In 2010, Allistair and his oldest son Alliston created history by becoming the first father and son combination to play in the same WAFL League match.
As the outstanding WAFL player of the national era and one whose pace and skills would have excelled in any football era, Allistair Pickett has earned his place in the West Australian Football Hall of Fame.
