Ray Sorrell was one of the finest centremen. A left-footer, he regularly won the ball, turned on a wide arc to evade opposition players and sent East Fremantle into attack with long, raking drop kicks. He came through the North Fremantle juniors and joined the blue-and-whites in 1956 at the age of 18. A ball magnet who regularly polled well in the Sandover Medal. Finished third in his second full season behind teammate Jack Clarke and East Perth’s Graham Farmer and was beaten on a count back by Perth’s Frank Pyke by a vote in 1963. He was named on a wing in East Fremantle’s Team of the Century, the great Nipper Turscott getting the centre spot.
