They bred them tough in those days and the legendary defender worked on the Fremantle wharves during the week before turning into a fearsome competitor on Saturday. “He played the game hard, respected hard opponents and could perform in any position,” said teammate Clive Lewington. Frank Jenkins played much of his football in defence but Lewington believed he had the power, speed and ball skills to play anywhere. In his first season in 1937 he polled a then record 34 votes to win the Sandover Medal, 13 votes clear of Subiaco’s Lou Daily. The record stood until 1981 when another champion Bulldog, Stephen Michael, polled 37 votes. Jenkins was the centre half-back in the premiership teams of 1947-48.
